INGELHEIM, GERMANY — Boehringer Ingelheim has registered the Phase III AIRWARD trial to evaluate verducatib, an investigational oral therapy targeting DPP1, in adults with symptomatic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who continue to experience exacerbations despite usual treatment and have blood eosinophil counts below 300 cells/µL. The trial aims to assess the efficacy and safety of verducatib in reducing the frequency and severity of exacerbations over a period of at least 52 weeks, enrolling approximately 1,800 adults across more than 25 countries.
COPD is a progressive lung disease characterized by airflow limitation and frequent exacerbations that significantly impact quality of life and healthcare systems worldwide. Boehringer Ingelheim emphasizes the need for therapies addressing underlying drivers of COPD, particularly neutrophil-driven inflammation affecting 60 to 90% of patients. Dr. MeiLan K. Han, Principal Investigator for AIRWARD, stated “The AIRWARD trial marks a significant development in efforts to address one of the major challenges in lung health: disease”
