UCLA Team Engineers ‘Triple-Threat’ Immune Cells To Fight Plaque Buildup

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA — UCLA researchers have engineered a new type of immune cell designed to attack the harmful cells that drive atherosclerosis, the fatty buildup inside arteries responsible for most heart attacks and strokes. The experimental cells, known as FAP.CAR-NKT cells, are designed to recognize three major threats inside arterial plaque, including rogue smooth muscle cells, inflammatory macrophages, and cholesterol-filled foam cells. In preclinical testing involving mice, a lab-grown human blood vessel model, and…
New MRI Agent Detects Lung Cancer

ATLANTA – Georgia State University researchers have developed a new protein-based MRI contrast agent that may help detect aggressive lung cancer and metastatic disease much earlier than conventional imaging. The technology, called hProCA32.Collagen, targets collagen type I, which is often elevated in invasive tumors, and was able to identify tumors and metastases as small as 1 millimeter in preclinical studies. The method was also able to reveal cancer spread to organs including the adrenal glands…
